An Unexpected Turn

“Mum, I am home!” I shouted joyfully as soon as I stepped into the house.
My mother must have heard me calling her as she immediately approached me. I was quite surprised as she was all dressed up to the nines as if she was going out. My mother explained to me that she wanted to go to the bank to make some necessary arrangements and told me to quickly to get ready.
After grabbing a bite, I was all ready and found myself in the car. I could tell that it was urgent as my mother was driving exceptionally fast as compared to the other days she drove.
In half the normal time, we were at the bank. My mother rushed into the bank like a gazelle and joined the first queue that she saw. I slowly walked in, enjoying the cool breeze of the air conditioner after a long and hot day. I settled down at the sofa snugly to watch the Mr Bean cartoons with the other children.
After some time, I started to doze off. But, I was awakened rudely by a gunshot that came like a bolt from the blue. I quickly opened my eyes. To my horror, I saw two masked men holding a gun.
“Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Sorry for the interruption. We are here to do some spring cleaning for this bank. If all of you want to be safe, please obey all instructions and gather quietly near the wall. Thank you for your co-operation,” explained one of them cynically.
Everyone followed their orders fearfully. I frantically searched for my mother while trying to blend in with the crowd. I was relieved to catch a glimpse of her. One of the robbers stood in front of all of us monitoring closely our every move with an eagle eye. The other was demanding money from the counter.
Suddenly, the robber caught sight of a young man fidgeting with his mobile phone. He was pulled out. The robber who was monitoring us pointed his gun near his temple. The young man was perspiring profusely and visibly shaken. In a twinkling of an eye, a gun shot could be heard piercing through the silence in the bank.
I closed my eyes tightly and trembled with fear. I slowly plucked up my courage and opened my eyes fearfully. The young man was alive! It was a shocking sight to see the robber sprawled on the floor in a pool of blood. The other robber had gunned down his own accomplice.
I was stunned. The robber lowered his gun and made his way out to the exit while mumbling that he was extremely sorry for everything. It was only later that I learned that the young man bore a close resemblance to his only son in the custody of his estranged wife. He must have missed him very much after all these years. That was the day that I was both the most shocked and surprised at the turn of events.
