An Adventure in Space!

“Brrr!!!” Ice-cold water splashed over my face. “Mooom!” I grumbled, “It’s the holidays, Can’t I sleep in for a bit? Please?”
“You know it is better to wake up early, now come on, breakfast is nearly done, you don’t want to miss it, do you?” As a matter of fact, it was the December holidays and I had been planning to sleep in and later study the magic spell book I bought from the corner shop in my neighbourhood. I guess mom ruined the plan. I snuggled up for forty winks more when I decided I would just read the magic spell book instead.

I went to my desk and fished it out of the mess in my room. I flipped through the pages until a particular page caught my eye. It featured in big bold letters: A SPELL TO GO TO SPACE THIS VERY MINUTE.
I thought it phoney. There is no such thing as that! Nevertheless, maybe it could work. Whom am I kidding? Whatever, I am going crazy like this, talking to myself. I will just try it. “dreamakollarealletryolla” I chanted.

Suddenly, I heard a whirling noise behind me. I jumped off my chair in curiosity, forgetting the phrase ‘curiosity killed the cat’. As quick as a flash, I was sucked in some kind of tunnel, and just as quick, spat out.

Bewildered, I brushed myself down and stood up. What met my eyes was unbelievable. Candies of every size and shape were lining a chrome road busy with pink limos. It was like a dream come true! I felt as if I was in a rocket going to space. There was a computer library with hundreds of computers inside and if you want to use them, it is free! There were pink and turquoise flying books in the sky that were flying low so you could actually pick one to read. There was a flying kiosk with two planes, one hot pink and the other aqua blue. Here I got a flying licence and was promoted two free private planes. My favourite place though, was the floating science centre. I saw many cool scientific gadgets and I gazed at Albert Einstein himself!

Out of nowhere came a loud booming but somehow friendly voice, “All astronauts please alight”.
“What about m…” I started to stammer. Magically, I was boarded on my hot pink plane with the other plane chained at the back. Then I shot through an opening in the wall.

Literally, stars as packed as sardines were all around me. I zoomed through the Milky Way till I came to the planets. Altogether, they were a riot of colours.

Eventually, I learnt how to operate the controls on my plane. Since the closest planet to the Sun is Mercury, I went there first. I wasn’t very long there as the temperature was boiling hot. Next came Venus, but it was not as exciting as I thought. I skipped Earth, so next was Mars. This was the exciting part. When I landed, I saw a Martian trying to make what looked like a rocket whilst eating a packet of Mars Chocolate Bars. I took pity on him and asked “Do you want to use my plane?” in English. Surprisingly he answered “Yes, please, I want to visit Planet Earth,” I must have looked completely bewildered as he continued, “Please, may I?”
“Sure, sure, you may,” recovering from my shock. I gestured towards my aqua blue plane. He climbed in and so did I, except I climbed into the pink plane. I checked my watch and realised that it was already late. I skipped all the other planets and returned back to Earth.

Before coming back home, I dropped him off at the Science Centre in Singapore. He slipped a Martian dollar bill into my palm. Once safe at home, I was scolded and questioned by mom. She was extremely worried. She was off the handle! “Where have you been?” She practically shouted. “You were not here for breakfast!” I did not answer since everybody would have thought I was nuts. Not to mention, maybe I am! When I looked out the window, the plane was gone. I was wondering if it was all a dream until I found the dollar note, wet from my perspiring hand, still in my palm. I realised that doing someone good never hurts anyone.
